AbstractIntra-urban vegetation plays an important role in the quality of life in the cities. Therefore, it is important that the intra-urban vegetation receive adequate maintenance in order not to become a vector for disease dissemination or illegal settlement. Remote sensing configures a potential tool to boost the process, especially with the actual developments of high-spatial-resolution sensors onboard satellites. Applying NDVI and ARVI on QuickBird images of dry and rainy periods of an urban area of São José dos Campos city (São Paulo state), it was possible to analyze if the intra-urban vegetation has received proper maintenance. Meanwhile, considering the hypothesis of vegetation indices susceptibility to atmospheric effects, we was also tested the application of the same methodology on images which were previously converted to surface reflectance using the FLAASH software. The non-realization of atmospheric correction generated commission and omission errors concerning the class which indicates the conservation status of the targets of interest.
